Our Mission & Past Ball Grant Recipients
The Hill Country Charity Ball Association, Inc. was founded in honor of Charles Bowmer Schreiner, V (January 17, 1980-January 2, 1981) who died of a congenital heart disorder. Baby Charlie was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schreiner, IV (Mary Helen). Each year, HCCBA, Inc., dedicate the proceeds of the annual gala to non-profit organizations seeking to improve the lives of others. The first meeting of the Hill Country Charity Ball Association, Inc. (“HCCBA”) was hosted at Rachel’s Table on November 14, 1984, at 11:30 a.m. The following ladies were invited by Mary Helen Schreiner to become the first members of the association: Tweety Eastland, Debra Henderson, Monica Starkey, Cynthia Real, Margaret Phillips, Rhonda Hardin, Cathy Hawkins, Toni Morris, Cathy Oehler, Melissa Schneider, Betty Mosty, Cindy Hunt, Becky Jons, Barbara Parker, Diane Oehler, Priscilla Crozier, Suzanne Story, Cathy Ashton, Trish Sebek, Fluffy Cash and Macky Pitts.
During the first meeting, members considered the types of organizations which would qualify for funding from the HCCBA. The members considered the Hill Country Youth Ranch, Kerr County Animal Welfare Society, Hill Country Museum, Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, Schreiner College, The Lions Camp, Beautification of Kerrville and local diseased organizations. They also decided the membership should be limited to 25 or less members. The members felt it was important to the ball to have at least two types of music, to have interesting things to do and see at different locations and for the event to be held in Kerrville. They also wanted the event to be void of Country Western music, the evening to be formal and a theme to govern the decorations and the activities of the evening. Most importantly, they wanted the Hill Country Charity Ball to be different from any other function in the Hill Country.
The first Hill Country Charity Ball was hosted on Saturday, May 3, 1986, at the YO Ranch Hilton Hotel. The proceeds from the first ball were given to Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital for use in purchasing a Central Information Monitoring station for patients in the hospitals new Intensive Coronary Care Unit. Since that first ball, over $1.7 million has been raised by the HCCBA for local charities.
